| The Howard County Bar has over 450 attorney members who
practice or live in or near the county. Although most are sole or small
firm practitioners, several large firm representatives actively
participate in HCBA.
HCBA holds monthly meetings, at either lunch or dinner time, at
convenient locations in the Columbia area. The HCBA also has a
holiday social in December; New Admittees Reception in January and a Golf
Tournament in July benefiting a designated
charity.
HCBA meetings vary in content. Some feature speakers who discuss
current hot issues affecting the profession, and others present subjects
unrelated to the law. For example, one monthly meeting
featured a panel of judges who discussed plans to revamp the Howard County
Circuit Courthouse. HCBA's affordable meetings give
lawyers an excellent opportunity to network with their peers and local
judges.
HCBA members receive the Association's publication "The
Barrister." This monthly newsletter carries news about HCBA
activities and members as well as timely articles on current matters of
interest to the legal profession. And through its 10 person Board of
Directors, the input of HCBA members is passed on the to Maryland State
Bar Association, the American Bar Association and other relevant
organizations.
HCBA offers five types of membership: active; associate;
judicial; honorary; and active. Annual dues are $100. Members
are eligible to participate in HCBA's Lawyer Referral Service and
designate the areas of practice in which they wish to receive
referrals. The annual enrollment fee for the Referral Service is $100.
